Sort in ascending order?

Please note:  The percentage return from gambling on the lottery is low, about 30% if you don’t win the jackpot, because 28% goes to ‘good causes’. This compares with a return of about 70% from fruit machines or the bookies if you’re careful, and maybe 97% from a roulette wheel.
  • Never gamble more than you are happy to lose.
  • If you want to give to charity, give directly to the ones you choose.
  • You’ve got to be in it to win it.

‘Excalibur’, a 6/49 random number generator, was originally developed as a spreadsheet. It is now available for Windows (3.1+, 303k zip, UK colours). If you use a Mac or prefer not to unzip and install, and the roller at the top works, save this JavaScript page.

Spreadsheets are an ideal format for a Lucky Dip generator if you want to keep records, for example in a syndicate.

Download either the Works (v3, 20k), the Excel (v5, 36k) or the Quattro Pro (QPW v5, 170k) version.

(You may copy, modify and republish all these files without acknowledgement. No liability will be accepted whatsoever.)

When you open the spreadsheet you should see a display similar to this -

The blue rows and columns are hidden. If you press F9 the top row of six numbers will give you a random selection of numbers from 1 to 6 which don’t repeat and are arranged in ascending order. The next two rows select from 1 to 49 for the lottery. Type over the numbers in the first lottery row, and then copy the entire active row below down one so you have two active rows again. Fill in the numbers drawn, matches per line and cash won columns and your hit rate and payback are calculated next time you press F9.

Good luck!
